SARAH KINSLEY on her debut album, Escaper

Sarah Kinsley’s debut album, Escaper parts the dismal clouds and opens up a new realm. In this other world, the night sky shimmers with gold stardust, some leftover shine gifted by the glistening sun. Here, reality bends to us like light through a prism, each distinct color now a possibility spread out before us. Who are we but wanderers weaving in and out like the red thread of fate, entwined only by clasped hands squeezing tight? Eventually, fingers lose their desperate grip, light beams straight, and the stars sigh to the sun. The clouds return, but after our brief escape, reality doesn’t seem so dim.
When asked about the album, Sarah says, “I think a huge theme of this album is ‘Who do you become when you need to escape?’ and ‘Where do you go when you don’t really want to exist in the real world anymore?’ The first half of this album is about that imagined world.” Sarah builds us a world full of possibilities through her music. It feels like a safe haven from the battering storms of the world. As much as the album is a place of refuge for her listeners, it also seems to be a cathartic spot for the writer’s woes. She says, “I feel like it’s a testament to music as a form of expression that is very necessary as a way to move through grief.” She lets her music, “carve out a space through sound,” that can be rested on to reflect when going through such emotional times.
She speaks about how she treasures platonic love and finds sometimes it even stings more than romantic love when lost. She states, “There is no social understanding of how to move through the loss of a friendship. You understand how to go through heartbreak. There are so many portrayals in the media of how to deal with heartbreak, but I never understood that with friendship.” Sarah definitely sets a precedent for this in her own right. In “Starling”, the lyrics are “We could never be those girls again/ If we tried, put your hand and swear/ We'll be fine if we're still here at 45/ If you don't marry someone, then neither will I/ Say you'll be mine.” That sad nostalgia of old and once fierce friendships permeates the album and gives it its wistful tone.
Escapism and the concept of different realms is a poignant theme of the album. When asked about how she came up with this idea, she says, “I was inspired by the idea of a language and whole universes being created between two people, and when you decide to leave that world, that entire place is left untouched like a wasteland of memories and inside jokes that no one else would understand. It’s very heartbreaking.” Although that specific world created by the bond of friendship is left to be a still picture, it is a lovely memoriam to look upon and a testament to the pure love that shaped it.
“Realms” explores the theme of the album at its heart. The lyrics are about escaping through the many worlds we make for ourselves, and how different choices in life could potentially lead us down different paths. Particular lyrics that embody the uncertainty and endlessness of this is, “Through the night and through the day/ Right to the еdge and the end of time/ What if this realm is all where you're mine?/ What if this is it for you and I?/ What if this realm is the only world where we collide?” Although dreaming of endless possibilities can feel free, it can also be overwhelming and drive us deeper into a place of loss.

Sarah acknowledges the importance of escapism through her album but also realizes while developing it that life is also worth living. She says, “But I think my biggest revelation with this album and what I hope people would carry while they listen to it is that escape is necessary for survival, but at the end of the day, there is still something very beautiful about choosing to engage with the world and live in it and love it even with flaws. The person I’m writing through on this record realizes that eventually.”
So, although the clouds part for us, we must also be ready to float back down to earth and experience the life that allows us to dream up a pretty place to escape.
Sarah will release her debut album, Escaper, on September 6th, 2024.
