MET GALA 2022: GILDED GLAMOR'S COLOR PALETTE
The Gilded Age, reflective of a soft and delicate dusting of gold leaf, is one of opulence and glamour layered thin. The term for this period in New York City from 1870-1890 was coined by Mark Twain, in his 1873 novel of the same name to describe the era's patina of splendor, covering the period's unstable foundation holding up industrialists' excessive wealth. As New York City's wealthy bustled from the shorelines to the gilded heart of NYC, in voluminous bustles of navy and plum trailing behind, mansions stretched vertically into the cerulean blue sky over 5th Avenue. At the very first sparkle of the time period, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or The MET was built on 5th Avenue with vertical columns, rounded arches, and of course, the first inception of its grand staircase that is carpeted in velvety wool each MET Gala on the first Monday of May.
2022's MET Gala theme was "Gilded Glamor," which can be defined by a variety of clothing details and adornments. There are a few main elements of fashion during the Gilded Age in New York City. With many becoming excessively wealthy, pieces were resplendent with decadent details from lace trim and ribbons to ruffles and bows. Hats were often so excessive and intricately adorned that they were humorously called "Four Stories and a Basement!" Fashion plates at the time also almost always feature two silhouette features- a "bustle" which was is voluminous fabric layered at the back of a woman, and the "princess line" created from bodices and corsets with vertical seams tightly hugging the body of the wearer. This style was popularized by Charles Frederick Worth who created this style for Princess Alexandra of Denmark's wedding. The fashion seemed to reflect the period's focus on vertical architectural details with long slender lines. The men of the period also utilized these long lines in frock coats for formalwear and striped trousers for sportswear.
FIT FASHION HISTORY TIMELINE
One of the most notable elements of the era though, was the color palette. During the Gilded Age, synthetic dyes were used which meant that fashion came in highly saturated hues and were often multicolored. According to Lydia Strickling in her article “Gilded Age Fashion,” for NPS (National Park Service), “Clothing was often vibrantly colored, thanks to the increased use of synthetic dyes, which were still a fairly new innovation. Women’s clothing featured multiple colors in the same outfit, something that was uncommon prior to this decade. It was fashionable to layer vibrant colors on top of dark ones. A popular combination was plum and navy blue.” In HBO's The Gilded Age, renowned Costume Designer Walicka-Maimone notes that differences in character's color palettes represented the distinctions between "old money" and "new money," a concept central to NYC's Gilded Age. She explains, "Russell’s costumes were a stark contrast to the central “old money” characters of Agnes and Ada, who both stick with monochromatic jewel tones, with the former regularly wearing shades of purple and blue while the latter wears gold, orange, and red.” Read below for a full PALETTE of 2022's MET Gala!
