GEMINI announces north american tour Still Blue
announcement
WORDS by Tessa Swantek TALENTGemini PRUnbound Entertainment
“I do enjoy [Inside Out], but to be honest, it didn’t feel like myself. It felt like I was making music that the others like rather than what I like. I felt empty. Then I realized, shouldn’t I be making music that I can really enjoy? That’s how [Still Blue] was created." -GEMINI
South Korean R&B/ hip-hop artist, GEMINI, under @AREA, a record label founded by the producing duo, GroovyRoom, released his latest EP Still Blue on December 13, 2022. The EP’s release comes a little over a year after his first EP release, Inside Out. In GEMINI’s “Still Blue (short film)” he says, “I do enjoy [Inside Out], but to be honest, it didn’t feel like myself. It felt like I was making music that the others like rather than what I like. I felt empty. Then I realized, shouldn’t I be making music that I can really enjoy? That’s how [Still Blue] was created. I just made this album with the songs I like. I didn’t care what others thought. For the last 3 to 4 months, I saw myself enjoying making this album and didn’t get tired. I had the greatest experience throughout my career.” The short film reveals GEMINI in golden low light in front of hazy blue fogged mountain peaks - a tone similar to the EP’s cover which shows blurred silhouettes cloaked in electric blue light. In an interview this past year with PANORAMA, when asked if he could summarize his music in one word, GEMINI picks “coldness.” His music does almost sound like an ice sheathed sound chamber. There’s a solitude to Still Blue, like being alone in a large space. There’s a loneliness in the sound that sends back an echo.
GEMINI’s introductory tracks often set a cinematic scene, and Still Blue’s introductory track, “Love is Banned,” lays out a swelling soundscape like a siren song, luring listeners into the ocean’s rolling folds, deeper and deeper until lyrics “Love is banned (I can’t see)” drown out in an electric guitar’s sweeping current. Like a siren song, some tracks pull you in with a pirate’s promise of a soft love song at the surface. Deeper down, however, the soundscape is more dangerous, with fluctuating sound. While he is not to be equated to another artist, he plays with sound like Abel Makkonen Tesfaye of The Weeknd, creating an escapist atmosphere. Each track has a noticeable parting sound that is as if you are being taken into another scene. “a place we used to go,” the EP’s fifth track, for example ends with a crackling, like the sound of ice slowly cracking or a record’s needle slowly spinning.
